Fastest Internet connection in the World!

I was just sent an email about a 75 year old woman from Karlstad in central Sweden, who has been thrust into the IT history books because she has the world’s fastest internet connection.

This lady receives 40 Gigabits per second pumped straight to her home! What?
Perhaps I should say that again: 40 Gigabits per second

That’s “break-neck” speed, to me anyway. (Please feel free to “drool” - That’s right, well done.)

Uhm, back to our reality: The email I received had the words “I wish” in the subject line and it clearly expresses how we feel about our Internet connection speeds here in South Africa and probably in most countries around the World.

While most “developed” countries like the US and the UK enjoy fast Broadband with connection speeds well over 1mbps, South Africa enjoys low speed connections well under the 1mbps mark.

Below are the theoretical “maximum” speeds currently on offer in South Africa:
Iburst: Up to 1Mbps
HSDPA: Up to 1.8 Mbps. Drops to GPRS rates in non coverage areas.
ADSL: Up to 384 kbps, 512kbps, 1 Mbps and 4 Mbps (1024 kbps = 1Mbps)

The reality however, is that these maximum speeds are rarely achieved because actual average speeds are dependent on factors such as time of day, location, supplier capacity, remote site being accessed and good old technical problems.

The cost of most of these broadband solutions are still high and is likely to remain like that for the time being. So this is our reality and we can only hope our future will be brighter soon.

      Wow…that’s super duper fast.

I wonder how did she ever managed to get that…
Well, in reality that’s not possible yet in the current infrastruction of the fibre optic.

It sure is super fast. Wish we could have that kind of speeds, but alas :)

She got that speed because she’s the mother of some internet guru who wanted to kill two birds with one stone - Prove to the world that there is no limit to internet connection speed, and also introduce his mom to the internet.

What a lucky mom. Not sure if she wanted the attention or the speed…

Look at the connection speed of Japan, Korea and some parts of China. You will see even crazier speeds!

it makes the US and Canada look like developing countries.
